Long Tail Keywords and SEO

What are Long Tail Keywords and How do they relate to SEO?

A lot of webmasters are under the impression that you pick a set of keywords you want to optimize for, optimize the page for them, and your done. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Real SEO is a ever changing process that needs constant updates and revisions.

An example of this is Long Tail Keywords. This is a relatively simple idea that a lot of webmasters either don’t get, or just don’t do. The way most search engines are setup now almost requires implementing this, so pay attention.

Long Tail Keywords are the keywords that are down at the end of the search chain. You have absolutely no chance going against the big boys of “Web hosting” or “Weight Loss” or any of the other, what I call, “main keywords.” The reason is because everybody is optimizing for those keywords. So to have a prayer with SEO, you have to go the other route.

Going through the back door, this is as good as name as any to describe this. The point is, you need to think about targeting keywords further down the list of your main set. Once you get a good grasp on those, slowly move towards optimizing for the much larger ones in your market.

I still get a few customers who want to spend $500 and get in the top 10 results for “real estate” or other such competitive terms. Once I inform them of the realities of this and offer them the alternative of long tail keywords, they either leave to find another SEO or more likely stay and go with the long tail program.
